February, the last month of winter, is almost up and finally, we will be able to celebrate Spring coming and the first spring and bright holiday – International Women’s day which is related with 8th of March.
In XX century this day is associated with manifestations, political actions of solidarity and fresh flowers. The story of IWD began in 1908 when there was a great demonstration where 15 000 women participated in New York, it was the first time when women have shown themselves vocal and demanding.
Since 1909 till the First World War International Women day was celebrated in the end of February (to be precise the last Sunday of the February was chosen).
In 1910 during the Second International Conference of Working Women Clara Zetkin tabled the idea of an International Women's Day. She proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day - a Women's Day - to press for their demands.
In 1913 in Russia after long discussions, it was decided to transferred the celebration of IWD to 8th of March and it was held up by women from other countries. During the First World War, there were demonstrations against the war till 1917 when in Russian again the women began the strike for “bread and peace” as a protest of the death of over 2 million Russian soldiers during the war. Since then the 8th of March became the official national holiday in Soviet Russian and in 1975 it was adopted by United Nations.
Nowadays IWD is a declaration of spring, new life, beauty and flowers of course. In Russia and all over the world women are heroines of the day when men propose them bouquets of fresh seasonal flowers and other gifts as chocolate or stuffed toys, they also clean their apartments and prepare the dishes to give their beloved women a day of rest and freedom or invite them to the restaurant. And women devote this day (in Russia it is still a day off) to themselves!
The next week we will talk more about first spring season flowers in different countries and traditions of celebrating the 8th of March all over the world!
