The leaves of the Aechmea are provided with small scales which constitute a very efficient system of absorption. In desert regions, this serves as a protection against the heat wave. These scales prevent the plant from unnecessarily losing too much moisture when it is under a blazing sun. The more silvery-white and velvety the leaves, the more scales the Aechmea has. This bromelia also takes care of you : it purifies the air by removing formaldehyde (a harmful gas found among others in cigarette smoke but also in preservatives of cosmetics and furniture). Unlike many other plants, it releases oxygen at night, not during the day. This also makes it an ideal companion for the bedroom.
